Right Brain Dominant Learners Reflection
As I am completing this reading, I am a day away from picking up my youngest son from his first year at Edinboro University. This article could be his life story so far. Michael is majoring in Film and Video as an art major. He always chose these types of projects as options when in school. Michael has a learning disability in math, which was finally identified after many "mom-hours" with the school. Math problems caused him to tune out as early as 2nd grade, which created a distaste for all things school. Many of the suggestions in the reading that were offered to help these children better tap into both sides of the brain were those I needed to get him through projects, homework, and studying for tests all the way through high school. He definitely benefited from hands on activities, but particularly from working in a quiet area at home. One of the suggestions given was to "use your child’s visual brain to its best by encouraging his
learning through using color." His favorite Art class this semester in college was Color II, which used computer animation - another one of his creative genius strengths! I always knew that both of my kids were right brain learners, but reviewing with this article made me feel that I was reading about my own kid's life story so far. It's amazing to see how he's progressed, and even more reassuring that research supports his choice of career. No wonder he's been so happy while so far from home!
